I was eating in Banh Mi at Saigon Bakery over the weekend and Chinese New Year celebration lion came in for Lai See. Walking out there was a whole festival going on the Mott St.

day 305: New York Knicks
Tonight I watched the New York Knicks play the Charlotte Bobcats at Madison Square Gardens. It was my first basketball game and I thought it was one of the most fantastic sporting events I’ve seen.
day 274: slideluck potshow
Tonight I went to Slideluck Potshow which is basically a photography event where people all bring a dish each to share Potluck style while viewing photography in a slide show format. Anyone can submit work. The slide show showcases works created by novice, undiscovered and established artists. This event aims to bring people together around food and art,and to give them an interesting, engaging and fun platform for sharing art with their community.
As part of the festivities, there was an Irving Penn Photobooth – dedicated to the late Irving Penn who died October this year. Here are some shots.

Tonight I went to the Scale relaunch event. I was invited by Thomas, who is a subscriber to my blog. Great to meet new people via my photography.
day 250: NYC Dumpling Festival
Today I attended the NYC dumpling festival where there was pretty much every type of dumpling under the sun on offer. There was also a dumpling competition. The dumpling competitive eating contenders had nothing on these hot dog eating champs though. Below is the largest wheat dumpling ever produced – 786 pounds in weight, 4.5 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft in diameters and it has the equivalent of 945 dumpling fillings inside.
day 231: Tango Gracefully
In NYC tonight you can bring your partner and tango under the stars in this public space to the Manhattan Tango Quartet.
< day 230: Is it strange to ask dudes to pose for you while waiting in the bathroom line?
day 226: nvr say nvr
My good friends Nini and Jen pictured below used to DJ and run a mid week night called NVR SAY NVR at a bar called Kings Cross. Must say the music selection is the best NYC has to offer. They describe their music as ::NEWWAVEPOSTPUNKBRITPOPINDIESOULSHOEGAZEROCK::. I’ve been promising the girls that I would do a post for them ever since the first time I was there. I’ve been so slack that the night has now finished up so this is a back dated post in memory of NVR SAY NVR. Not to worry though, they are putting on another bi-weekly Sunday night gig at Sweet Paradise.
day 224: it's my birthday!
My first NYC birthday I spent with my friends having a nice dinner at Lil Frankies.
day 220: Vices & Virtues
Tonight I went to a pretty awesome photography exhibition at Jack Studios – Vices & Virtues. Free food and alcohol in an amazing studio space overlooking the Hudson and Midtown.
Today the locals reclaimed the streets for the St. Marks Place block party where street was shut down to make way for BBQs, fire hydrants, dodgeball, a Meat Pie eating contest (yes as in the Aussie meat pie) and local music artists.
day 210: pecha kucha nyc
Tonight I attended a Pecha Kucha event. Pecha Kucha means ‘chit chat’ in Japanese and the event was conceived as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. What makes it interesting is its format: Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. The presenters were from all walks of life including: an architect who worked on the new Cooper Square building, a product designer who designed a more ergonomic version of the Kindle and an art collective who reconstructs devastated buildings in South America, into community artworks. The presenters were really inspirational and I was amazed at what they’ve achieved already in their young age. Makes you wonder what you’re doing with your life…
day 205: fashion night out
Tonight was Fashion Night Out. This is a night where all fashion retailers around NYC host a soiree with free music, free drinks and heavily discounted items. You can imagine the crowds in downtown Manhattan where I was. Below are shots at Oak. There was an area where you can customise your jeans with tools like scissors, grates, paint and studs. Highlights included The Rapture playing live in the Prada Soho store and Grace Coddington (Creative Director of Vogue) recreating her magical Little Red Riding Hood story from the September issue of Vogue in the Prada 5th Avenue store.
day 188: The people of Girl Talk
Today I went to the The Pool Parties at the Williamsburg Waterfront. These parties are held every Sunday during summer. They always have an amazing line up and are absolutely free. Today it maxed out its 8,500 capacity when Girl Talk played. I was lucky enough to be given a press pass by my friend Shelly. So I got to go on stage to photograph surrounded by tonnes of teeny boppers/hipsters who were allowed to go on stage and go nuts as part of the live show. Even though the whole time I was sketching out that the stage was going to collapse from all the bouncing – I got to take some wicked shots and experience something truly unique…the stage did break eventually but not with me on it.
