This is the Beerolympics – the objective is to get the ping pong ball into the other teams’ glass, whereby they have to skull the beer. First team to make their opponents finish all their glasses of beer wins. Simple. Vegas.

day 139: July Fourth (Independence Day) – Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

Today is Fourth of July aka Independence Day. We kicked off the day in true American style by attending the annual event: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. This tradition began in 1916 when 4 immigrants had a hot dog eating competition to see who was the most patriotic. Today there are over 30,000 spectators and broadcasted live on ESPN with over 1.5 million viewers. This year’s contest was particular heated as it was supposed to be six-time champion Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi’s come back against two-time defending champion Joey Chestnut. To the crowd’s dismay, Kobayashi lost to Joey Chestnut by 3.5 hot dogs. To you and me that is a fair few hot dogs – not when Joey Chestnut ate 68 hot dogs in 10 mins. A world record. This is what they call Major League Eating at its best. Ahh only in America, you gotta love it.

Tonight I went to ‘the brooklyn bailout‘ which is part of the series of Danger Parties held in NYC for the past several years. Dozen of parties have been held from renagade train parties, all night warehouse parties to taking over the Williamsburg bridge. The party was set in the cavernous rooms & secret niches of the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. It was pretty out there – reminded me of a uni rave-esque parties they used to chuck at Sydney University. What were they called? Freaky Loops or something? It was dark techno, minimal, trancey combinded with a dash of hip hop and pop. It was all sorts, alternate in a hippy uni student way. You get me?

Today was a beautiful day. The sun was out in all its glory. It was definitely the warmest day I’ve experience since landing in NYC. I ate lunch on the steps at Union Square and joined all the people who were basking in the sun. It was an exciting feeling to know that summer is just around the corner with thoughts of what that might bring. In the square, the atmosphere was lively as buskers played their music and street performers entertertained the crowd. The funniest thing though was this crazy guy in a dress yelling absolute rubbish while trying to tie one of those neck cushions you take on a plane to his upper thigh so he can make his dress look wider? (this is what I assumed) He wouldn’t let me take his picture so I asked him what his story was. He told me his story was that he’s a human being and something about the end of the bible is another story – this continued on for about 10 minutes. I ending up sneaking a shot anyways.
