day 248: unknown goth punk synth pop band

It was my friend Jen’s birthday tonight. Afer dinner celebrations at Les Enfants Terribles, we proceeded to Home Sweet Home where it was some sort of indie goth night. Anyway, there was a goth punk synth pop band that came on that I thought was bloody awesome.

day 228: The Mars Bar NYC

Mars Bar – I’ve walked past this bar in Noho a few times and have always noticed that the people in there look like they’ve either just shot someone or have been shot at themselves. Yes its divey and sketchy as hell but there’s something about this place that makes me curious about stepping inside…

day 226: nvr say nvr

My good friends Nini and Jen pictured below used to DJ and run a mid week night called NVR SAY NVR at a bar called Kings Cross. Must say the music selection is the best NYC has to offer. They describe their music as ::NEWWAVEPOSTPUNKBRITPOPINDIESOULSHOEGAZEROCK::. I’ve been promising the girls that I would do a post for them ever since the first time I was there. I’ve been so slack that the night has now finished up so this is a back dated post in memory of NVR SAY NVR. Not to worry though, they are putting on another bi-weekly Sunday night gig at Sweet Paradise.

day 175: Cafe Moto Brooklyn

I visited a friend in Brooklyn last night and we popped into Cafe Moto for dinner. This place is a small Brooklyn hideaway. The creative direction and attention to detail of the nostalgic decor, circa 1938, is enough for anyone to cross the Williamsburg bridge. Not to mention the fantastic French fare on offer.

I was compelled to write about this place when Sasha Dobson set up shop and performed live for the dinner guests. Her soulful music coupled with the atmospheric lighting really created a certain romantic ambiance. Even after half a year in NYC, it’s still a nice surprise for me to chance encounter a place like this on a Monday night in the quiet outskirts of Williamsburg where I can eat great food listening to beautiful music in a charming environment.

day 123: the frying pan

The Frying Pan is a bar built on a historic lightship (1929) that spent 3 years at the bottom of a bay. Situated at the Chelsea piers, its a great way to see the sunset on the Hudson while sipping on cocktails.

day 93: macao trading co.

Tonight I met up with some friends at Macao Trading Co. in Tribeca. The top level of this place is a restaurant decorated like an old warehouse filled with antiques behind caged displays, running around the back perimeter, accessible only by ladder. The food is really interesting – because Macao was colonized by the Portuguese, everything on the menu had a Chinese version and a Portuguese version. Then descend downstairs and you walk into a bar situated in what was an old opium den. The bar was filled with very interesting erotic Chinese artworks and paraphernalia, to say the least…

day 91: shooting hobo gestapo

Last weekend I was invited to tag along with new friend and photographer Hobo Gestapo on his shoot at various events around NYC. I decided to do a cover his journey – in essence I’m ‘photographing a photographer photographing’ make sense? . We met at Cabin, known for its after gig clientele of bands touring NYC. Owned by an ex-Strokes member, Cabin is one of those ’secret’ New York bars where you have to walk through a pizza joint to find it. Next stop was the ‘Fischerspooner, Larry Tee and DJ Falcon‘ gig at Webster Hall. We ended our night at Chloe 81, where the focus was on Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace who was hosting her birthday party.

day 36: prohibition, battles & happy endings.

Another busy weekend exploring this city’s diverse offering.

> Owned by Tim Robbins, the Back Room is housed in an actual Speakeasy during the prohibition days.
The entrance is disguised by a toy store that says “Lower East Side Toy Company“.

day 30: over the weekend….

This past weekend was spent roaming the streets of Manhatten and Brooklyn at night, journeying from one venue to the next. Here are some street/bar/people shots. As of today I have been in NYC for 1 month. My how time flies. I am so glad I took up this photography project. Not just for the memories but for the many interesting people I’ve met, me  behind the camera and them behind the photo. Everyone has a story to tell and are all more than eager to share it – all you need to do is ask nicely.
