day 194: the september issue
Tonight I watched The September Issue. One of the best docos I’ve seen in a while. I loved the humor, the insights into the unique personalities of the fashion world and I especially loved the portrayal of Grace Coddingtion (Creative Director of Vogue) – such a talented woman who is consistently fighting uphill battles of contrasting points of views with her Editor in Chief Anna Wintour. Even if you’re not in fashion or don’t care much for it, you will appreciate this well produced documentary – so go and watch it!
day 192: big spaceship
Today I was at one of the most well respected digital creative agencies globally – Big Spaceship. One of the projects I’m currently working on at JWT is directing the digital strategy for the 2010 International ANDY Awards‘ advertising campaign. Ty Montague (our Chief Creative Officer) and Michael Lebowitz (founder and CEO of Big Spaceship) are co-chairing the awards this year which is how I ended up at the Big Spaceship office. Michael Lebowitz and his agency are of legendary status within digital creative circles so I was kinda stoked to have met and be working with Michael and his team. One of my all time favourite campaigns, HBO Voyeur, which collected several high-profile awards including multiple Grand Prix at Cannes, came of the Big Spaceship office. You can read more about it here.
day 191: marcoart
On my way home tonight I was struck by a fantastically colourful mural as I was walking along Ludlow St. I wondered why I had never noticed it before as it was a like a flashing beacon in an otherwise monotonous and dreary street which characterise the aesthetics of the Lower East Side. When I saw Marco of Marcoart putting the finishing touches to the Mural, I realised that it was new. I introduced myself to the artist and he told me that he had been commissioned by the deserted building property owners (which I think development has halted due to the economic downturn) to paint something cheerful on its perimeter fencing. Marco is a POP artist who has been commissioned by the likes of Le Bron James, LL Cool Jay, Run DMC, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Russell Simmons and Marc Ecko.
day 190: The Bravery
Tonight I watch an old fav band of mine The Bravery. Another free gig in New York City.
day 189: Jeremy the aid worker
One of my closet friends here is Jeremy – he is my Aussie drinking buddy, we go on benders and just talk crap to each other till all hours. He is kinda like my home away from home. Anyway this post is a story about how Jeremy quit his job at Citibank (no he was not one of the 50,000 retrenched, yes he actually quit) and is now in Kenya doing aid work for the next 3 months. You can read more about it and follow his adventures here. Please also donate here to his cause. These are shots I took at his farewell. Bit of a bummer I didn’t actually take a photo of him. I will miss him and now have to find a new drinking buddy to listen to my banter.
day 188: The people of Girl Talk
Today I went to the The Pool Parties at the Williamsburg Waterfront. These parties are held every Sunday during summer. They always have an amazing line up and are absolutely free. Today it maxed out its 8,500 capacity when Girl Talk played. I was lucky enough to be given a press pass by my friend Shelly. So I got to go on stage to photograph surrounded by tonnes of teeny boppers/hipsters who were allowed to go on stage and go nuts as part of the live show. Even though the whole time I was sketching out that the stage was going to collapse from all the bouncing – I got to take some wicked shots and experience something truly unique…the stage did break eventually but not with me on it.
I am now an official member of the International Center of Photography. The current Avedon Fashion exhibition is amazing.
day 184: Janice Vella
Today I caught up with another new Aussie arrival Janice who I to work with at TEQUILA\ Australia.
day 183: JWT NYC
Today I started a new contract at JWT. Founded in 1864 and with 10,000 employees worldwide, it is one of oldest and largest advertising agencies in the world.
Today we rode from midtown Manhattan to City Island. Basically you ride up 200 streets from Manhattan Island and cross over to the Bronx. Next you cross the Bronx from east to west and City Island lies just across a bridge. Total 18 miles. The prize for the ride is eating yummy lobster on the seashore.
day 178: Sam Coombs
Tonight I caught up with an(other) old aussie mate Sam. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him, we went to uni and did some business together back in the day. Sam is a super smart guy with his fingers in many pies – he has a surfwear label: Shortstraw, is the marketing manager of MTV Australia and here is his blog: The Critical Slide Society.
So last night I was walking home and I came across these guys on my street. I was all ‘Whats going on here?’ and they were like ‘We’re an Ice Cream Truck – with ice creams, toys and candy from ALL OVER THE WORLD’.
So they begin to tell me the story of how the Heartschallenger concept was born one early morning 15 yrs ago at a rave party in Mojave desert. Lo (the creator) had a vision of a cute ice cream truck pulling up in the middle of nowhere and providing all the party kids with magical treats. – hahah I love it!
Now there are trucks in L.A., Miami & New York…
Gotta love those Visions where or when ever they may come to you. A nice tale about following your dreams.
