This is a tenement building on Orchard st, Lower East Side, which is one of the many that sprouted up in the 19th Century. There’s an interesting tenement history in NYC. These apartments targeted immigrants who literally ‘got off the boat’ and were created by opportunists (who were immigrants themselves) to combat overcrowding during the migration influx.
Far from luxurious, each apartment had a ‘front room’ (only room with natural light), kitchen and bedroom at the back and on average 7 people lived in one apartment. They had, no shower, no bath and no toilet (it was only in 1867 when the first of the tenement law was enacted that 1 toilet was required for every 20 people). Garbage was disposed of in boxes set in front of the house. A description printed in the New York Tribune in 1863 summed it up:
“composed of potato-peelings, oyster-shells, night-soil, rancid butter, dead dogs and cats, and ordinary black street mud, (the garbage boxes formed) one festering, rotting, loathsome, hellish mass of air poisoning, death- breeding filth, reeking in the fierce sunshine, which gloats yellowly over it like the glare of a devil whom Satan has kicked from his councils in virtuous disgust.”

day 74: I wake up to a shoot in my lounge room.
This morning I woke up to Amanda doing a test shoot in our lounge room. So I did what every normal person would do – I shot the shoot.

day 73: waiting at delancy st station
Today I went to Aramique’s bbq in the backyard of his new home in Forte Green, Brooklyn. Backyards are rare in NYC, especially in Mahattan. Now that the warm weather has finally hit the city, those that have the luxury of a backyard or rooftop are celebrating with outdoor barbeques and parties all weekend long. You can definitely feel the transition of the city and its inhabitants coming alive. I can’t wait to experience the warm months to come.

Downtown Manhattan as seen from Downtown Brooklyn.

Today I went to The Lance Armstrong Foundation in Austin to discuss plans for building a global action movement to defeat cancer under the Livestrong banner. For those who’s been living under a rock, Lance Armstrong is professional racing cyclist who won the Tour de France a record-breaking seven consecutive years. Lance has come out of retirement and will be racing again this year.
The LAF office is super cool in a organic non corporate way.

Today I went to Austin, Texas on a business trip. Unfortunately, it was a straight in, attend meeting, straight out affair. So I didn’t get to experience the people or culture or the ribs! I did however capture this guy enroute to the airport.

Meet amazing photographer Jen Diamond – she’s my photography partner in crime. We do missions around NYC seeking out great shots. She also works at B&H Photo – the best photography equipment store in NYC.

Tonight I went to ‘the brooklyn bailout‘ which is part of the series of Danger Parties held in NYC for the past several years. Dozen of parties have been held from renagade train parties, all night warehouse parties to taking over the Williamsburg bridge. The party was set in the cavernous rooms & secret niches of the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. It was pretty out there – reminded me of a uni rave-esque parties they used to chuck at Sydney University. What were they called? Freaky Loops or something? It was dark techno, minimal, trancey combinded with a dash of hip hop and pop. It was all sorts, alternate in a hippy uni student way. You get me?

go to day 63: cold beer
New Yorkers doing it tough during recession times are thinking of all sorts of ways to make a buck.

Today I met with Faris Yakob – EVP Chief Technology Strategist at McCann Erickson New York. I have been following his writings for quite some time now. He is a thought leader and an inspiration to me and many others within the digital & brand communications world. ‘I’m trying to work out how we communicate in a networked world, how we can make people happy, how we can do awesome stuff that is useful or entertaining or both.’

day 60: church of rock
I was in uptown today and past this church. Does it look evil or what?

day 59: raymond from paraquay
Today I met Raymond from Paraquay on the streets of LES. He is currently listerning to CBS FM (he’s favourite radio station). He tells me the story of loosing his passport and having no proof of identity. He has been in USA for 35 years and cannot leave the country as much as he wants to go home to reunite with his family.

day 58: pirate of the lower eastside
Today I spotted pirates invading LES. Watch out cos they’re coming to your neighbourhood.
